Questions before buying gold coins
Which gold coin size should I compare?
Start with your budget and whether you may want to sell individual coins later. A smaller coin lets you buy or sell a smaller unit, but compare the quoted premium per unit of gold rather than assuming the smallest coin offers the lowest overall cost.
Are gold coins exempt from VAT and Capital Gains Tax?
Qualifying investment gold is generally exempt from UK VAT. Britannias and Sovereigns can benefit from UK legal-tender Capital Gains Tax treatment. The exemptions do not apply identically to every gold product. Check the specific coin and your circumstances with an independent tax adviser.
Is the quoted price the same as the gold spot price?
No. The spot price is a reference for the metal; a retail coin quote can also reflect manufacture, distribution, condition, collector demand and the dealer’s premium. Ask what is included, including delivery, and compare like-for-like quotes.
Can I sell gold coins later?
Coins can be sold, but the price and the time needed depend on the product and market. Ask about current selling arrangements and the difference between buying and selling quotes. A purchase price or future profit is not guaranteed.
