Gold and silver demand rises ahead of the Autumn Budget

The Telegraph reports a sharp increase in demand for precious metals ahead of the Autumn Budget, as uncertainty over potential tax changes prompts investors to consider how they hold and protect their wealth.

The article highlights growing interest in Britannias and Sovereigns, with the Capital Gains Tax exemption available on UK legal tender coins influencing buying decisions. Gold bars and gold ETFs held outside an ISA can be subject to CGT, making the choice of bullion particularly relevant for investors concerned about future tax liabilities.

Paul Williams of Solomon Global commented: “We’re seeing more people asking how gold is taxed and what that means for their choice of bullion.”

Figures from The Royal Mint reinforce the wider rise in demand. Revenue from physical silver purchases increased by 295% in the first nine months of 2026 compared with the same period last year. Gold bullion coin purchases rose 21% in the three months to the end of September compared with the previous quarter, while platinum purchases increased by 118%.

The Royal Mint also reported a 25% increase in enquiries about holding physical gold over the past week, amid concerns about cyber attacks and supply-chain disruption.

The central theme is that tax uncertainty, alongside wider economic and security concerns, is encouraging investors to explore physical precious metals, with greater attention to the tax implications of the products they choose.
