The PCGS 2019 Queen’s Beast Yale of Beaufort 1oz Gold Coin design
The Queen’s Beasts began as ten six-foot statues guarding the entrance to Westminster Abbey at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, each carrying the badge of a family in her ancestry. Jody Clark reinterpreted all ten for the Royal Mint’s bullion series, issued two coins a year between 2016 and 2021.
The yale is a mythical beast with a goat-like body, boar’s tusks and horns said to swivel in any direction. It reached the crown through Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII, and Jody Clark’s design pairs it with the Beaufort portcullis.
Where the yale came from
Heraldic yales appear on the gatehouses and chapels the Beauforts endowed, and the family carried the beast into royal use when Henry VII took the throne. Its swivelling horns were meant to show it could defend itself from any direction.
PCGS grading of the 2019 Queen’s Beast Yale of Beaufort 1oz Gold Coin
A graded Yale is also a useful comparison piece against the later Royal Tudor Beasts Yale, which treats the same creature quite differently.
PCGS is an independent American grading service used worldwide. Each coin it certifies is authenticated, graded on the 70-point Sheldon scale used across the hobby, and sealed in a holder that cannot be opened without showing it. Mint State grades run from MS60 to MS70, the highest grade on the scale.
We supply the coin at the grade shown on its holder. Because grades differ from coin to coin and the images are illustrative, please ask before ordering if a specific grade matters to you.

Why buy a PCGS 2019 Queen’s Beast Yale of Beaufort 1oz Gold Coin?
The Yale is the strangest creature in the series, which gives it a following among collectors who like heraldic oddities.
It is a full ounce of CGT-exempt, VAT-exempt gold in a design you will not find on mainstream bullion.
Why buy 1oz gold coins?
The one-ounce coin is the standard unit of the gold market. Because gold is priced per troy ounce, a 1oz coin’s metal value is simple to follow, and the larger size usually carries a lower premium per gram than fractional coins. Compared with a large bar, a holding of 1oz coins can still be sold a coin at a time, so you keep flexibility without paying fractional-coin premiums.
