2023 Coronation Britannia 1oz Silver Coin
Product Description
The 2023 Coronation Britannia 1oz Silver Coin is a special edition silver Britannia in one troy ounce of 999 fine silver, carrying King Charles III’s first crowned portrait. As UK legal tender with a £2 face value, it is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents.
The 2023 Coronation Britannia 1oz Silver Coin design
Philip Nathan’s Britannia appears on the reverse with the four security features used on silver Britannias since 2021, while Martin Jennings’ crowned portrait of the King replaces the usual uncrowned effigy on the obverse.
The Royal Mint has said the 2023 Coronation Britannias will be the only Britannia bullion coins to bear the King’s first crowned effigy, and it set the mintage of this silver coin at 200,000.
A plain border instead of castellation
Standard Britannias have a castellated border on the obverse. The Coronation Britannia silver coin does not: the Royal Mint used the same crowned obverse as the rest of its Coronation bullion range to improve efficiency and reduce waste, so the plain border is a genuine feature of this issue.
Security features on the silver Coronation Britannia
- A latent trident-to-padlock image, a nod to Britannia’s naval history and to the coin’s security.
- Surface animation that brings the sea behind Britannia to life.
- The micro-text DECUS ET TUTAMEN, the same Latin motto once lettered on the edges of British coins, meaning ‘an ornament and a safeguard’.
- Tincture lines, the heraldic shading that highlights the Union flag on the shield.

Why buy a 2023 Coronation Britannia 1oz Silver Coin?
This is the silver Britannia with a difference: a one-off crowned obverse that sets it apart from every other silver Britannia date.
It suits silver Britannia collectors completing 2023, and buyers who want an affordable coronation coin with the Britannia’s security features.
Why buy 1oz silver coins?
A one-ounce silver coin gives you a recognised, easily valued unit of silver at a much lower cost per coin than gold. UK legal tender silver coins such as this one are exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. That makes them a popular way to hold silver for the long term.
Frequently asked questions
