The PCGS 2017 Queen’s Beast Red Dragon of Wales 1oz Gold Coin design
Ten heraldic beasts watched over the 1953 coronation, carved in plaster for the occasion and standing for the dynasties that met in Queen Elizabeth II. Between 2016 and 2021 the Royal Mint issued each of them as a bullion coin, all designed by Jody Clark, before closing the series with a coin showing all ten together.
The red dragon has stood for Wales for centuries and came into royal heraldry through the Tudors, whose Welsh descent it advertised. Jody Clark shows it rampant, wings raised, holding its shield.
The statues behind the series
The original plasters are now held by the Canadian Museum of History, and stone replicas stand at Kew Gardens, where you can still see the beasts the coins are based on.
PCGS grading of the 2017 Queen’s Beast Red Dragon of Wales 1oz Gold Coin
The dragon is among the most sought-after designs in the series, so a graded example carries more collector weight than the quieter beasts.
PCGS is an independent American grading service used worldwide. Each coin it certifies is authenticated, graded on the 70-point Sheldon scale used across the hobby, and sealed in a holder that cannot be opened without showing it. Mint State grades run from MS60 to MS70, the highest grade on the scale.
The grade of the coin supplied is the one stated on its PCGS label. Images are for illustration and grades may vary, so please contact our team if you would like a specific grade.

Why buy a PCGS 2017 Queen’s Beast Red Dragon of Wales 1oz Gold Coin?
The Red Dragon is the most recognisable national symbol in the set and tends to attract buyers who are not otherwise collecting the series.
Behind that, it is a full ounce of 999.9 fine gold with the tax advantages of UK legal tender.
Why buy 1oz gold coins?
The one-ounce coin is the standard unit of the gold market. Because gold is priced per troy ounce, a 1oz coin’s metal value is simple to follow, and the larger size usually carries a lower premium per gram than fractional coins. Compared with a large bar, a holding of 1oz coins can still be sold a coin at a time, so you keep flexibility without paying fractional-coin premiums.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the dragon one of the Queen’s Beasts?
It represents Wales and entered royal heraldry with the Tudors, who used it to underline their Welsh ancestry.
Is a graded Red Dragon still CGT-exempt?
Yes. Certification does not affect the coin’s status as UK legal tender.
