The Queen’s Beasts began as ten six-foot statues guarding the entrance to Westminster Abbey at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, each carrying the badge of a family in her ancestry. Jody Clark reinterpreted all ten for the Royal Mint’s bullion series, issued two coins a year between 2016 and 2021.

Released in April 2021, the Completer Coin gathers all ten beasts into a single circular design, closing a series that had run for five years. Jody Clark, who designed each beast individually, brought them together for the finale.

The Lion of England, Griffin of Edward III, Red Dragon of Wales, Unicorn of Scotland, Black Bull of Clarence, Falcon of the Plantagenets, Yale of Beaufort, White Lion of Mortimer, White Horse of Hanover and White Greyhound of Richmond all appear on the reverse.

The original plasters are now held by the Canadian Museum of History, and stone replicas stand at Kew Gardens, where you can still see the beasts the coins are based on.
