PCGS Certified 2023 Coronation Britannia 1oz Gold Coin
Product Description
The PCGS Certified 2023 Coronation Britannia 1oz Gold Coin holds one troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold, pairs Britannia with King Charles III’s first crowned portrait, and has been graded and sealed by PCGS. It is UK legal tender with a £100 face value, exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents and VAT-exempt as investment gold.
The PCGS 2023 Coronation Britannia 1oz Gold Coin design
Martin Jennings’ crowned effigy of the King sits on the obverse, a portrait the Royal Mint has said will appear on no other Britannia bullion coin. Philip Nathan’s Britannia fills the reverse, protected by a latent image, surface animation, micro-text and tincture lines.
The obverse has a plain border rather than the usual Britannia castellation, because the Royal Mint used the same crowned obverse across its Coronation bullion range.
Security features on the Coronation Britannia
- A latent trident-to-padlock image, a nod to Britannia’s naval history and to the coin’s security.
- Surface animation that brings the sea behind Britannia to life.
- The micro-text DECUS ET TUTAMEN, the same Latin motto once lettered on the edges of British coins, meaning ‘an ornament and a safeguard’.
- Tincture lines, the heraldic shading that highlights the Union flag on the shield.
PCGS grading of the 2023 Coronation Britannia 1oz Gold Coin
With a Royal Mint mintage of 10,000, the Coronation Britannia is one of the scarcer modern gold Britannias, and certification confirms both its identity and its condition on the label.
PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) is an independent grading company that authenticates coins, grades them on the 70-point Sheldon scale and seals them in a tamper-evident holder. Bullion coins are graded in Mint State (MS), and the label shows the coin’s date, denomination, grade and a unique certification number that can be checked on the PCGS website.
Grades vary between individual coins. You will receive the coin at the grade printed on its label, and product photographs are illustrative rather than of the exact coin. Contact our team if you need a particular grade.

Why buy a PCGS 2023 Coronation Britannia 1oz Gold Coin?
A graded Coronation Britannia is the natural centrepiece for a 2023 Britannia collection, alongside the Queen Elizabeth II and uncrowned King Charles III coins of the same date.
It keeps the full tax advantages of a gold Britannia while protecting the coin’s soft 24-carat surfaces.
Why buy 1oz gold coins?
The one-ounce coin is the standard unit of the gold market. Because gold is priced per troy ounce, a 1oz coin’s metal value is simple to follow, and the larger size usually carries a lower premium per gram than fractional coins. Compared with a large bar, a holding of 1oz coins can still be sold a coin at a time, so you keep flexibility without paying fractional-coin premiums.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn’t this Britannia have a castellated border?
The Royal Mint used the same crowned obverse as the rest of the Coronation bullion range to improve efficiency and reduce waste, so the plain border is correct for this issue.
Is a certified Coronation Britannia still VAT-exempt?
Yes. Certification does not change its status as investment gold, so it is VAT-exempt in the UK.
