2026 Yellow Gold Sovereign Gold Coin
Product Description
The 2026 Yellow Gold Sovereign Gold Coin is the first Sovereign of the Royal Mint’s return to a yellow-gold alloy, holding 7.32g of fine gold in 22-carat metal with King Charles III on the obverse. As UK legal tender it is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents and VAT-exempt as investment gold.
About the 2026 Sovereign
From 2026 the Royal Mint alloys the Sovereign to give it the yellow tone of historic coins rather than the rose-gold hue of recent decades. The Mint describes the change as returning the Sovereign to its roots, and it followed feedback from collectors who preferred the traditional colour.
The coin is still 22-carat with 7.32g of fine gold, and it keeps Pistrucci’s St George and the dragon on the reverse with Martin Jennings’ portrait of the King on the obverse.
New security features for 2026
The 2026 bullion Sovereign also introduces new security details: micro-text on the reverse, a latent image beneath the King’s portrait that changes between royal symbols as the coin is tilted, and a half-tone pattern on the obverse.
Rose gold and yellow gold, side by side
Placed next to a 2025 coin, the difference is visible: the 2025 Sovereign is noticeably pinker. Both contain exactly the same amount of gold, since only the alloying metals change, not the 22-carat standard required by law.

Why buy a 2026 Yellow Gold Sovereign Gold Coin?
The 2026 coin is the first of the yellow-gold Sovereigns, which makes it the start of a run rather than the end of one, and a natural pair with the 2025 final rose coin.
As a current-year Sovereign it is widely available through bullion dealers and remains exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents as sterling legal tender.
Why buy gold Sovereigns?
The Sovereign is one of Britain’s longest-established gold coin series and is widely recognised by bullion dealers. Its small size, under a quarter of an ounce of gold, makes it a flexible unit: you can release a little of a holding at a time rather than selling a whole ounce. As UK legal tender it is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents and VAT-exempt as investment gold.
Frequently asked questions
How is the 2026 Sovereign different from the 2025 coin?
The alloy changes to give a yellow-gold appearance instead of the rose tone. The weight, fineness and gold content are identical.
Does the colour change affect the value?
No. Both coins contain 7.32g of fine gold and are valued on that, though collectors may pay a little extra for first or last years of a change.
