Sovereign Gold Coin (Mixed Years – Best Value)
Product Description
The Sovereign Gold Coin (Mixed Years – Best Value) contains 7.32g of fine gold in 22-carat alloy, with the year and monarch taken from available stock. As UK legal tender it is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents and VAT-exempt as investment gold.
About the mixed-year Sovereign
Benedetto Pistrucci designed St George and the dragon for the Sovereign in 1817, and it has appeared on the coin ever since. The Sovereign itself goes back further still, to Henry VII in 1489, and every year’s output is tested at the Trial of the Pyx, the annual examination of UK coinage.
Because the year is chosen from stock, the portrait may be Queen Elizabeth II or King Charles III, and some coins carry alternative reverse designs used in particular years rather than Pistrucci’s St George.
Rose gold and yellow gold
Modern Sovereigns are 22-carat gold alloyed with copper, which gives them a pinkish, rose-gold tone. The Royal Mint has confirmed that 2025 is the last year of that alloy: from 2026 Sovereigns return to a yellow-gold appearance, still 22-carat but alloyed differently. Older Sovereigns in a mixed-year holding may therefore vary slightly in colour.
What varies in a mixed-year Sovereign
- Year and monarch: taken from stock, so portraits differ.
- Colour: rose-gold tone on recent dates, yellow gold from 2026 and on many older coins.
- Condition: coins may show light marks from handling, which does not affect gold content.
- Reverse: usually St George and the dragon, occasionally a commemorative design.

Why buy a Sovereign Gold Coin (Mixed Years)?
This is the lowest-premium way to buy Sovereigns from us, because we supply whichever dates we hold rather than a specific year.
It suits buyers building a gold holding in small units, where the date makes no difference to what the coin is worth.
Why buy gold Sovereigns?
The Sovereign is one of Britain’s longest-established gold coin series and is widely recognised by bullion dealers. Its small size, under a quarter of an ounce of gold, makes it a flexible unit: you can release a little of a holding at a time rather than selling a whole ounce. As UK legal tender it is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents and VAT-exempt as investment gold.
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose the year or monarch?
No. Both are taken from stock, which is what keeps the premium low. Choose a dated listing if you need a specific coin.
Do older Sovereigns contain the same gold?
Yes. The Sovereign’s weight and fineness have been unchanged since 1817: 7.98g in total with 7.32g of fine gold.
Are mixed-year Sovereigns CGT-exempt?
Yes. All Sovereigns are UK legal tender, so gains are exempt from CGT for UK residents whatever the date.
