The PCGS 2018 Queen’s Beast Black Bull of Clarence 1oz Gold Coin design
The Queen’s Beasts began as ten six-foot statues guarding the entrance to Westminster Abbey at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, each carrying the badge of a family in her ancestry. Jody Clark reinterpreted all ten for the Royal Mint’s bullion series, issued two coins a year between 2016 and 2021.
The black bull came to the crown from the House of York through the Dukes of Clarence, and Jody Clark gives it a heavy, muscular treatment with its shield held before it.
The statues behind the series
The original plasters are now held by the Canadian Museum of History, and stone replicas stand at Kew Gardens, where you can still see the beasts the coins are based on.
PCGS grading of the 2018 Queen’s Beast Black Bull of Clarence 1oz Gold Coin
Broad, smooth areas like the bull’s flank show contact marks readily, so the grade is a meaningful measure on this design.
PCGS is an independent American grading service used worldwide. Each coin it certifies is authenticated, graded on the 70-point Sheldon scale used across the hobby, and sealed in a holder that cannot be opened without showing it. Mint State grades run from MS60 to MS70, the highest grade on the scale.
Grades vary between individual coins. You will receive the coin at the grade printed on its label, and product photographs are illustrative rather than of the exact coin. Contact our team if you need a particular grade.

Why buy a PCGS 2018 Queen’s Beast Black Bull of Clarence 1oz Gold Coin?
The Black Bull is one of the strongest designs of the series and marks the Yorkist strand in the Queen’s ancestry.
It is also a straightforward ounce of CGT-exempt, VAT-exempt gold.
Why buy 1oz gold coins?
The one-ounce coin is the standard unit of the gold market. Because gold is priced per troy ounce, a 1oz coin’s metal value is simple to follow, and the larger size usually carries a lower premium per gram than fractional coins. Compared with a large bar, a holding of 1oz coins can still be sold a coin at a time, so you keep flexibility without paying fractional-coin premiums.
Frequently asked questions

The House of York, which passed to the crown through the Dukes of Clarence.
Does the Tudor Beasts series have a similar bull?
Yes. The Royal Mint’s later Royal Tudor Beasts series includes its own Bull of Clarence, with a different design.
