2023 Coronation Britannia 1oz Gold Coin
Product Description
The 2023 Coronation Britannia 1oz Gold Coin is a special edition of the Royal Mint’s gold Britannia, struck in one troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold with King Charles III’s first crowned portrait. As UK legal tender with a £100 face value, it is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents and VAT-exempt as investment gold.
The 2023 Coronation Britannia 1oz Gold Coin design
The reverse is Philip Nathan’s standing Britannia with the four security features the Royal Mint has used since 2021. What sets this coin apart is the obverse: Martin Jennings’ crowned portrait of the King, made for the coronation year.
The Royal Mint has said the 2023 Coronation Britannias will be the only Britannia bullion coins to carry the King’s first crowned effigy, and it set the mintage of the 1oz gold coin at 10,000.
Why there is no castellated border
Standard Britannias have a castellated border on the obverse. The Coronation Britannia does not: the Royal Mint used the same crowned obverse as the rest of its Coronation bullion range to improve efficiency and reduce waste, so the plain border is a genuine feature of this issue.
Security features on the Coronation Britannia
- Latent image: below Britannia’s gown, a trident switches to a padlock as the coin is tilted.
- Surface animation: the background waves appear to move as the light changes.
- Micro-text: the words DECUS ET TUTAMEN (‘an ornament and a safeguard’) run around the design.
- Tincture lines: fine lines pick out the Union flag on Britannia’s shield.

Why buy a 2023 Coronation Britannia 1oz Gold Coin?
The Coronation Britannia gives you the familiar Britannia, with its security and recognition, in a one-off version that no later Britannia will repeat.
It is a strong choice for Britannia collectors, since 2023 is the only date with three different obverses: Queen Elizabeth II, the uncrowned King and the crowned King.
Why buy 1oz gold coins?
The one-ounce coin is the standard unit of the gold market. Because gold is priced per troy ounce, a 1oz coin’s metal value is simple to follow, and the larger size usually carries a lower premium per gram than fractional coins. Compared with a large bar, a holding of 1oz coins can still be sold a coin at a time, so you keep flexibility without paying fractional-coin premiums.
Frequently asked questions
How is the Coronation Britannia different from a standard 2023 Britannia?
It carries the King’s crowned portrait instead of the uncrowned one, and its obverse has no castellated border.
How many Coronation Britannia 1oz gold coins were struck?
The Royal Mint set a mintage of 10,000 for the 1oz gold coin.
