2027 Britannia KCIII 1oz Gold Coin
Product Description
The 2027 Britannia KCIII 1oz Gold Coin contains one troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold, struck by the Royal Mint with King Charles III on the obverse. It is UK legal tender with a £100 face value, so it is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents and VAT-exempt as investment gold.
The 2027 1oz Gold Britannia design
2027 marks forty years of the gold Britannia, which the Royal Mint first issued in 1987 as Britain’s own one-ounce bullion coin. Philip Nathan’s standing Britannia, with trident, shield and olive branch, has carried the coin through all four decades and continues on the 2027 reverse.
The obverse carries Martin Jennings’ uncrowned portrait of King Charles III, the effigy that has appeared on Britannia bullion since 2023.
Forty years of the gold Britannia
The first gold Britannias of 1987 were struck in 22-carat gold. The Royal Mint moved the coin to 24-carat, 999.9 fine gold in 2013, and in 2021 added the four security features that make the modern design one of the hardest bullion coins to copy. The 2027 coin brings all of that together: the original design, pure gold and the current security technology.
Security features
- Latent image: a small trident beneath Britannia’s gown changes to a padlock as the coin is tilted.
- Surface animation: the waves behind Britannia appear to move in changing light.
- Micro-text: DECUS ET TUTAMEN, ‘an ornament and a safeguard’, runs around the design.
- Tincture lines: heraldic shading defines the Union flag on Britannia’s shield.

Why buy a 2027 1oz Gold Britannia?
The 2027 coin is the current-year one-ounce Britannia, which is what most UK buyers look for when adding gold: a full ounce, a low premium per gram compared with fractional coins, and a date that marks the coin’s fortieth year.
Its CGT exemption gives it a clear advantage over a one-ounce bar for UK investors who expect to sell at a profit.
Why buy 1oz gold coins?
The one-ounce coin is the standard unit of the gold market. Because gold is priced per troy ounce, a 1oz coin’s metal value is simple to follow, and the larger size usually carries a lower premium per gram than fractional coins. Compared with a large bar, a holding of 1oz coins can still be sold a coin at a time, so you keep flexibility without paying fractional-coin premiums.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 2027 Britannia different from the 2026 coin?
The weight, purity, portrait and reverse design are the same. The date is the difference, and 2027 is the fortieth year since the first gold Britannia.
Is the 2027 1oz Gold Britannia CGT-free?
Yes. It is UK legal tender with a £100 face value, so gains are exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. It is also VAT-exempt as investment gold.
