2023 Coronation 1oz Gold Coin
Product Description
The 2023 Coronation 1oz Gold Coin is a Royal Mint bullion coin struck in one troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold to mark the coronation of King Charles III, whose first crowned portrait appears on the obverse. As UK legal tender with a £100 face value, it is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents and VAT-exempt as investment gold.
The 2023 Coronation 1oz Gold Coin design
The reverse, designed by John Bergdahl, shows His Majesty’s royal cypher: the King’s initials and regnal number beneath the Tudor Crown. A royal cypher is the monarch’s personal monogram, used on official documents, uniforms and post boxes, and this design was created for the Royal Mint’s Coronation bullion range.
The obverse carries the first crowned coinage portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, which received the King’s personal approval. It was introduced for the coronation at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023.
A one-year coronation design
The cypher reverse was made for the 2023 Coronation range rather than an annual series, and the Royal Mint set the mintage of the 1oz gold coin at 7,500. That gives it a clearly defined place in King Charles III’s coinage.

Why buy a 2023 Coronation 1oz Gold Coin?
This coin records a single historic event: the first coronation in Britain for 70 years. It combines a full ounce of gold with a design that will not be repeated on future bullion issues.
For investors, it keeps the tax advantages of UK legal tender gold; for collectors, the published mintage and the crowned portrait give it interest beyond the metal.
Why buy 1oz gold coins?
The one-ounce coin is the standard unit of the gold market. Because gold is priced per troy ounce, a 1oz coin’s metal value is simple to follow, and the larger size usually carries a lower premium per gram than fractional coins. Compared with a large bar, a holding of 1oz coins can still be sold a coin at a time, so you keep flexibility without paying fractional-coin premiums.
